City Serve 2008

ASB Chapel

1st Event of the Year: All School Party

Who: Vanguard University
What: All School Party with a Gladiator’s Theme
Where: Campus Mall
When: September 9th, 2008 8:30-10:30

Every September, the All School Party brings the whole school together as a meeting ground for new and old students alike. The party serves as the first major event after Frontline/ Welcome Week. This year’s party proved to be successful with about 500-600 students in attendance. Upon arriving, students were excited to jump in on every activity right away!

“The goals for this event were to bring students of VUSC together in a fun, active, and social environment,” Hernandez said.

Students rolled into the mall by the dozens, all dressed into theme. At every turn was a strategically placed Gladiator battle, for example, in the jousting inflatable or on the dodge ball field. Less intimidating options were the rock-climbing wall or the obstacle course.

“Overall, the party was a big success, everyone looked amazing, and it was a great way to start the year,” said Hernandez.

ASB would like to give thanks to Laguna and Huntington RA’s for promoting the event to freshman residents; the turn out was huge from those halls; to Plan It Interactive, CafĂ©, athletic department, and ASBG also for joining efforts to make this event possible.

Lastly, thanks to the 2008-2009 On Campus Director, Heather Hernandez and assistant, Mike Jones, who served as this event’s party planners.

Welcome to VU, Class of 2012!

Beach Blast is an event that takes place at Corona Del Mar State Beach. Traditionally, a BBQ, volleyball, beach towels, and Buck-Buck are all to be expected. Buck-Buck, a game in which students crunch together to create a base and for the pile of students who fly onto the stack, is a wild tradition that is unique to Vanguard Students. Generations of students have continued this game and very few injuries have been recorded. This year we had the most girls in the pile than ever before. Next year, we hope to break 30.

Welcome Week...

Welcome week takes place in the days leading up to the first day of classes. To prepare for the upcoming year, all the leadership teams, faculty and staff spent time in prayer together.

Leaders, of what is called “Frontline,” are joined by other student leaders to welcome in the incoming freshman and transfers. The Frontline leaders helped move belongings into dorms all day. Meanwhile ASB, was checking in new transfers and commuters, welcoming students, helping parents, and finalizing the interior design of the cove. Working together is the common thread that seems to tie this year’s leadership together.

The week continued by hosting a plethora of events for parents and new students. We hope to build community and display the heart of the Vanguard community. Welcome Week is a remarkable and memorable experience.

Here are some photos from Welcome Week/Frontline.

The Vision and Purpose

Residence Life, Outreach, worship band members, and Spiritual Formation unite for a retreat where all leaders are trained two weeks prior to the first day of school.

One week before school begins, Executive Board members train ASBG with administrative tasks, paperwork, and budgets.

Also apart of the training experience are exercises to help the team understand the work environment, procedures, and become united under one common vision.

The overarching vision for the year is to be visual and visible to the student body.

ASBG members were also able to share individual visions on a poster that said, “Together we envision.”

Here is what we came up with: “Overcome the stereotypes, embrace others, to spark an energized, involved, and active student body, to serve others, that hearts will be nurtured, that professionalism partners with soul care, to never give up, that souls will be stimulated, or communication will not suffer, to walk in humility and in meekness, to be a voice for the voiceless, to follow through, selflessness, that the family feeling lasts all year, to reach out, to be examples, to embrace change, to have authentic relationships, to be the body of Christ, that our love will change lives, to love others deeply, to activate others, that the bridge will not be scary, to create a safe place for students, to be a family and a welcoming place, to bridge the gap between leadership and the student body, and lastly, to be DREAMERS WITH ACTION!”

From training on through- we hope to serve you!
